Meanwhile in another story, Gamestop still continues to shit on the regular employees.

I’ve had a couple opportunities to work at a GameStop in my life via other friends working their, but they advised me against it every time. It’s unfortunate how consistent it tends to be at every GameStop

Im an sga at gamestop currently, and yes we get shafted on everything. Our hourly pay is barely competitive, our health benefits are bare bones (but at least its offered. I guess.) We get 15% discount on everything, BUT new consoles, and even that 15% is peanuts considering the retail industry standard is 20-25%, at least ea is giving sga’s, asst managers and store managers battlefront II, nba 2k18, and 2 other games for free on the ps4, but if you own an xbox one, well you get nothing, like myself, so i basically have no incentive to work here 😒 other than to move up get the freebies and hopefully change things. Oh did i also mention all store leaders are getting a free xbox one x upon release!? But hey, dont worry about it, you might get 25 hours a week 😒.

Just out of curiousity what was your motive for working there when starting out. I always had that mindset that it would be great to be surrounded by things I love and other people who love them. But like I said people warned me otherwise that it was more customer service oriented nonsense than a foothold into the gaming industry

Honestly the last 3 years ive been a stay at home dad, so with the fact that i am a gamer and i have a good amount of retail management experience, i figured it was a good job to get out of the house with and do something i enjoy, that and i know how excited i get and my daughters get (14 and 5) when a game or collectible comes out or whatever and i wabt other parents/gamers and kids tohave that same feeling. But after the “would you like to sign up gor a powerup rewards card gor 14.99 a year? No? How bout a disc guarantee its only x.xx dollars? No? Ok thats fine is there anything coming out you would like to preorder, you only beed to put $5 down? i had no intention of moving past being an sga, but being there for my short amount of time, and having to pitch sales so aggressively with upsells (maybe if they changed their business model they wouldnt be driving loyal and new guests away and not taking an annual hit of -16% in sales) ive made it my personal mission to move up in the company, high enough to possibly change some of the culture there. In no way am i saying its absolutely horrible, bc alot of the people youll work with, you will like and get along with, its the higher ups past the dm position (who are mostly non gamers, but have a business mba), that think have the “our bottom line” is what matters most attitude. If your into gaming and want to get a foot in the management door, its a good place to start, bc turnover is pretty high. If you want a foothold into the “gaming” industry, gamestop is not it. I would seek out a lower level position for a developer or publisher possible internship with one.

I really appreciate the perspective paul. I’ve worked in hotels for the past 5 years and a lot of other customer service and sale oriented jobs before that and I sympathize. Its frustrating that a company that is as big as it is like GameStop isn’t a better role model or career path for the people that want to get into the industry in roles other than a game designer. Customer service is such a common place first job and back up job (even though that has a lot to do with what you said about the turnover) that if they did have the goal in mind of creating a path for the industry that they could make a real difference.

If Gamestop wants to make fist loads of cash they should open up some Retro specific stores. There are plenty of existing employees with knowledge and passion to run them. With retro stuff condition is everything and you can’t get that from a website with generic pictures. The same cartridge can have 20 different appearances. Who wants to chance that?
