Later this month Bandai Namco is releasing New Gundam Breaker in North America. This news has most Gundam fans excited, and you can count us among them. For those of you unfamiliar with the Gundam Breaker series, it debuted back in 2013 and focuses on Gunpla, the popular model kits based on the Gundam franchise. Known for having action-packed gameplay and a massive amount of customization, Gundam Breaker has been very popular among its fans. New Gundam Breaker will actually be the first game in the series released in North America, so for many western Gundam fans, this will be their first opportunity to experience the series for themselves.
With almost forty years of series, movies, OVAs, games, and toys to pull from there are probably thousands of different mobile suits that could be included in New Gundam Breaker. The developers have stated that all the Gunpla from the previous games will be available along with some new additions, and then after launch, they are planning on adding over 100 new Gunpla. With that in mind, we wanted to share ten of these mobile suits that we are very excited to see and play with when we finally get our hands on New Gundam Breaker.
From an alternate version of the events of Char’s Counterattack, the Nightingale belongs to Char Azanable, arguably the greatest antagonist in Gundam history. This thing is a monster. Just look at it! It barely qualifies as a mobile suit at all, leaning more towards the realm of mobile armor. This beast packs funnels, a mega beam rifle, a pair of vulcan cannons, a beam cannon, two beam sabers, and a shield which carries a beam tomahawk and several micro missiles. In the lore of Gundam, it is also equipped with the powerful newtype use psychoframe cockpit. The Nightingale allows Char to counter the extremely powerful ν Gundam, and we can’t wait to see what it and its individual parts are capable of in New Gundam Breaker.
ASW-G-08 Gundam Barbatos Lupus Rex
A relatively recent addition to the franchise, coming in with Iron-Blooded Orphans. This mobile suit is optimized for close quarters combat and its feral appearance emphasizes this. With claws, a back-mounted tail blade, and arm mounted 200mm guns among its arsenal. I imagine the parts from this mobile suit are going to be popular, not only because the mobile suit has a decent fanbase, but because of the Gunpla’s unique cosmetic look.
MS-06FZ Zaku II Kai
Anyone that has seen Gundam 0080: War in The Pocket should be familiar with this one. It was the mobile suit of unfortunate Zeon pilot, Bernard Wiseman, who is affectionately known as “Bernie”. This is an unassuming mass-production unit that wouldn’t really stand up to the other suits on this list, but I really wanted to include on Zaku of some kind and this one has some story significance, and also looks pretty awesome.
RX-93 ν Gundam
One of the most powerful mobile suits ever built. The v Gundam was a high-performance newtype use mobile suit constructed specifically for use by the legendary pilot Amuro Ray. This would be used in his last battle against Char Aznable in Char’s Counterattack, and it more than earns its place on this list. Also check out that color scheme and the double delta fins on the head, this thing has some serious style.
GF13-017NJ Shining Gundam
Two words, Shining Finger. Coming from the over-the-top G Gundam. This one has a certain level of style and just plain awesomeness that the others on this list might lack. Even when it is eclipsed in its own anime by more powerful suits, it still manages to remain a fan favorite. We will be on the lookout for parts from this throughout our time with New Gundam Breaker.
XXXG-01W Wing Gundam
Pretty much everyone around my age is familiar with Gundam Wing. It was a longtime favorite on Cartoon Network’s Toonami. Even though many would probably be more excited to see the Gundam Deathscythe or the Wing Gundam Zero, we are most excited to get our hands on the Wing Gundam itself. We fell in love with this one during the premiere episode of the anime, and we are glad it is included in New Gundam Breaker’s roster.
The Grandaddy of all mobile suits in the Gundam Wing universe. Tallgeese has a complicated history in the anime and despite being very simplistic in design and lightly armed it is a force to be reckoned with. Its big, fast, and much more agile than it looks. The Roman centurion theme that it has going on is an awesome addition as well.
