The first-person shooter subgenre dates back to 1992 when Wolfenstein 3D was released for the DOS. Today, FPS games make up one of the most crowded genres in the industry. Every major multiplayer game, from Call of Duty to Valorant, appears to be a first-person shooter. That’s why it’s surprising how little appreciated the few excellent first-person shooters on Steam are.
First-Person Shooter Games You Probably Missed On Steam
Older games must have less than 3000 ratings to qualify in our ranking, while more recent games must have only 500 ratings. Let’s look at a few of these undiscovered gems.
1. Severed Steel
Severed Steel is a single-player first-person shooter with an innovative one-armed protagonist, a fluid stunt system, and destructible voxel settings. Your steel-toed boot and trigger finger and you are up against a superstructure full of criminals. Combine wall runs, dives, flips, and slides to eliminate every enemy.
2. Bulletstorm
Take on the role of Grayson Hunt, who is faced with a difficult decision between survival and vengeance following a crash landing on a deserted resort planet. An exiled member of the elite assassin group Dead Echo, Grayson’s blind desire for revenge finds his crew stranded on Stygia, where he can finally confront the commander behind his betrayal—or get his team off the planet alive.
The “Full Clip Edition” re-release in 2017 gave those who missed out on the Bulletstorm in 2011 a second chance to play.
3. Aliens vs. Ghosts
In the wave-based shooter Aliens vs. Ghosts, you must have quick reflexes and gun-switching skills. Boss battles, special abilities like summoning, various classes, and several upgrades are all in this game. In the first-person shooter, use nukes, electricity, freeze rays, heat rays, and strong minions to eliminate all the ghosts. Ghosts only resist your invasion of Earth.
4. Singularity
The FPS genre gains time manipulation from Singularity. It was released in 2010 by Raven Software, which created Call of Duty Warzone. Fight against enemies from the past, the present, and abominations stuck somewhere in between. They are armed with solid, cutting-edge weapons and the experimental Time Manipulation Device.
5. Nighthunt
Nighthunt is a first-person shooter focusing more on the action and 3v3 stealth gameplay than on monster-hiding. Play as a teenager at camp, where you must run, fight, and hide from other teens to stay alive.
The gameplay of Nighthunt is a combination of Dead by Daylight and Rainbow Six: Siege. You conceal yourself to ambush other players, catch them off guard, and move stealthily through the woodlands and cornfields.
