(Oahu, Hawaii) – A 63-year-old man with zero surfing experience is proving it’s never too late to try something new. What started as a personal challenge quickly turned into an inspiring internet moment, captivating viewers across social media. His unexpected rise to viral fame has inspired thousands, turning an ordinary day at the beach into a moment people can’t stop talking about.
Sporting a white vest, red shorts, and a pair of shades, the elderly man can be seen being interviewed by a cameraman near a beach in Oahu. “You guys ever surf before?” asks the cameraman, to which the man responds, “No.” With a touch of surprise in his voice, the interviewer states, “No?” before explaining, “We go around asking strangers if they have ever surfed before and if they say no, we offer to give ’em a free surf lesson.”
The would-be surfer takes off his sunglasses, and replies, “So I’m 63 and I’ve always wanted to try it. Now I’m getting heavy and I don’t even know if I could get that balance back. Did I tell you how old I was?” The cameraman seems unfazed by the man’s lack of confidence, and explains, “The oldest guy we ever had, 74, I think.” These words seem to ease his nerves and give him a much-needed confidence boost. “Really?” he asks, sounding surprised. “Yeah,” the cameraman responds.
Next, the cameraman states, “Yeah, we’re doing it.” and the rookie surfer nods his head, and calls out to his grandson, saying, “Hey grandson, we’re going surfing. Right now. Alright, let’s do it.” The clip then cuts to the 63-year-old stood on a surf board, as he begins his surfing adventure as he navigates the waves among other onlookers. Over the footage, the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ 2002 hit single Can’t Stop begins to play.
While he does fall off the surfboard a few times while he’s attempting to balance, his smile makes it clear he’s enjoying every moment. There’s even one extended moment where he glides along the wave, and his joy and excitement is palpable.
Finally, rounding out the clip, while the 63-year-old is sat atop his surfboard, the cameraman asks, “You got a lot of knowledge to share with the young kids nowadays? What’s one thing you tell them?” To this, the elderly surfer responds thoughtfully, “Man, be humble. You know. Lose that mask, that pride, that false pride, that ego.”
With the video quickly making waves online, social media users wasted no time sharing their heartfelt reactions. Over on Reddit, one user wrote, “I [expletive] love this. Think about how much more that guy gets out of his life because of his attitude. How much more fun is he to his family? How much more likely is he to try new things, to apologize, to learn?” while another chipped in with, “No knock on the guy, but I think we need to give props to the dudes who offered free surfing lessons and didn’t take his initial hesitation and excuses as a no.”
Meanwhile, others chimed in with further praise for the brave first-time surfer, with one penning, “Gramps slept good that night with a big smile” and another adding, “we would do well to take a single piece of advice every day from an older person...” A fifth commenter asked where the video took place, “This was in Oahu, right?” while another reply clarified simply with, “Yep.”
Overall, this heartwarming footage speaks to the joy of trying something new, no matter your age. For many online, it’s a welcome reminder that it’s never too late to chase a new adventure.
