Borderlands 3 developer Gearbox is hoping the September release of the new game will mark a return to glory for the now long-running series. In order to try and assure that is the case, the dev team has been working hard on new features that could put the game’s popularity over the top.

That doesn’t always mean brand new features that have never been seen anywhere else. When it comes to the new style of co-op play Borderlands 3 is going to use, Gearbox is banking on a system that first broke ground in the uber-popular shooter Apex Legends.

The ping system that Apex uses is geared towards making it easier for teammates to find each other, as well as weapons, ammo and shields. The system can also be used to help find enemies easier.

Making it easier to find targets is the first reason why the system has been so popular. Being able to easily communicate with teammates, even if players don’t want to use voice chat is the other reason Respawn Entertainment’s breakthrough tech is as popular as it is.

Gearbox recently released a new video showing how their version of the ping system is going to be working when Borderlands 3 hits store shelves.

While being able to ping items is going to make it that much easier to work with teammates, it also serves as an “accessibility” option for those who simply cannot use voice chat. Gearbox has been highlighting several other accessibility options that will be included in their new release.

Those other features include remappable controls, subtitles, and Xbox Adaptive Controller support. The announcement that the company is working hard to make the game fun for all players is a bit of good news fighting back what has been a wave of negative news.

That included Gearbox head Randy Pitchford came under fire shortly after the title was announced due to a flap over whether or not the game has Microtransactions and his handling of that debate. Luckily for the dev team, excitement over the newest installment in the series has largely drowned out the bad press.

Borderlands 3 is set for release on September 13 for the PS4, the Xbox One, and PC.
