Game of Thrones, the controversial hit series on HBO, finally came to an end after eight seasons. The show was a cultural phenomenon that culminated in the most viewed episode of any HBO offering. That is 13.6 million viewers for, the much talked about, finale.

HBO hopes to capitalize on their biggest show by creating a prequel series set thousands of years before the events of GoT. The details of the prequels, directed by S.J. Clarkson with showrunner Jane Goldman, is as big of a mystery as the White Walkers.

George R.R. Martin, author and executive producer, helped alleviate some of that mystery when he spoke to Entertainment Weekly about the prequel.

First of all, the Starks will still be around. That means Direwolves will also grace our TV screens once again. The White Walkers will play a role in the prequel as well. Let’s hope viewers learn more about them since Game of Thrones season 8 left fans questioning their motivations and origins.

Game of Thrones

As for fan favorites that will not return. The prequel is set before dragons were found in Westeros, so it’s easy to say that dragons will not be in the prequel. The Lannister family has yet to rise to power instead, the Casterlys will be the ruling family. This means Lannisters will not make an appearance unless the show dives into their origins as well.

Martin also discussed the state of Westeros during the prequel. Seven is the smallest amount of kingdoms Westeros has ever seen, which is how the continent is set up in the Game of Thrones we know.

A long time ago, that’s thousands of years ago, Westeros was divided into 100 kingdoms. This is the era of the prequel.

Lastly, Martin discussed the characters of the show. He described Game of Thrones as an ensemble, meaning there will not be just one lead character. It was previously announced that Naomi Watts, Naomi Ackie and Denise Gough will play central roles, which lead many to speculate they will be the main characters in the prequel.

The title of the show is still in question, but Martin did suggest “The Long Night” as a possibility. What do you think about the Game of Thrones prequel? Let us know in the comments.
