This article is over 6 years old and may contain outdated information.

During Marvel’s SDCC panel, MCU boss Kevin Feige took to the stage to announce the future of the cinematic universe after the Infinity Saga, which brings us to the Sorcerer Supreme himself. Doctor Strange 2 is happening and the sequel will officially be called Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

Scott Derrickson, who directed the first film, will return to direct the sequel. Derrickson told those at the Hall H panel that Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness would be “the first scary MCU film,”. Feige then chimed in, joking that “It’s gonna be PG-13 and you’re going to like it!”.

But that wasn’t all the Doctor Strange sequel news. Elizabeth Olsen, who is set to star in the Disney+ series WandaVision as Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch, will make an appearance in the movie as well. The events of WandaVision are expected to coincide with Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is set to release May 7th, 2021.

This is definitely some weird news. Many Marvel fans expected to hear about a Doctor Strange sequel at SDCC this year but it’s a safe bet that they weren’t expecting to see the film feature a Scarlet Witch appearance, multiverse shenanigans, or horror elements. For a universe that is attempting to evolve and continue its long-running success, unique ideas such as this could be what keeps the MCU fresh going into this new era.

And this is a new era for the MCU. Along with Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Marvel announced The Eternals, Shang-Chi: and the Legend of the Ten Rings (which will feature The Mandarin), Thor: Love and Thunder, Black Widow, Black Panther 2, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Captain Marvel 2, and that the Fantastic Four would be introduced in the MCU.

Oh, and I guess there’s also the big bombshell of Mahershala Ali being announced as Blade in the MCU.
