Oh what a day, what a lovely day! If you’re one of many who think 2015’s Mad Max: Fury Road is one of the best action movies ever made, you should rejoice. Director George Miller has just doled out a bit of hope for the future of the franchise. And given the troubling behind-the-scenes issues, we could use a little hope.

A tasking legal battle between Miller and Warner Bros., Mad Max: Fury Road‘s distributor, has been underway since 2017. His production company, Kennedy Miller Mitchell, took Warner to court over unpaid earnings, amongst other claims. Miller’s production company was set to receive a $7 million dollar bonus if they made the movie on a budget of less than $157 million. However, Warner Bros. claims they went over. Miller states that it was only due to costly delays and decisions made by Warner.

Any word about the series has been quiet ever since. Mad Max: Fury Roadย acted as a sort of relaunch for the franchise, which initially starred Mel Gibson in the title role. That film took an excruciatingly long time to get made, but Miller always envisioned other stories afterward. The legal battles have stopped him from pursuing new installments. But in an interview with Indiewire, Miller spoke about the future of Mad Max.

There are two stories, both involving Mad Max, and also a Furiosa story. Weโ€™re still solving, weโ€™ve got to play out the Warners thing, it seems to be pretty clear that itโ€™s going to happen.

He went on to state that the trial has become “extremely positive” after the 2018 merger with AT&T. The film made close to $400 million worldwide and won 6 Oscars out of 10 nominations. So, more from Miller will only be a good thing.

However, he’s gearing up to shoot Three Thousand Years of Longing with Idris Elba and Tilda Swinton. We’ll have to wait a bit longer, though something tells me it will be worth it.
