Well, this is an interesting development. Sony’s PS5 may not be fully backwards compatible after all, according to a report by BGR. This news comes fresh off of the recent details shared by Sony about the PS5. As it was revealed a few days ago, Sony’s new system will be hitting us holiday 2020. Also included in the report were spec details like improvements on the console’s signature Dualshock controller.

However, within the midst of the news of layoffs at Sony’s European offices, it has come to light that the backwards compatibility may not be all it seems.

PS5 is Backwards Compatible, Kinda

Backwards compatibility is starting to become an essential part of console hardware. PlayStation fans were disappointed with the lack of this feature in the PS4 while Microsoft was killing it in that field. PlayStation loyalists were stuck with a small library of downloadable PS2 titles and an awful streaming service. However, Xbox players could enjoy many of their old games on the Xbox One.

So, imagine the excitement players had when Sony announced that the PS5 would hold the capability to be fully compatible with PS4 games. It was refreshing to hear that Sony had listened to fan feedback. But, all is not as it seems!

PS5

In the above-mentioned report by BGR, a tweet from Twitter user BlackKite shared this information:

“Currently, the dev team is putting all power on verifying whether they can secure a complete compatibility. Please wait for more information.”

While these remarks are little to go off of, it seems there has been a complication. It is almost certain that many of the popular PS4 titles will be available on the PS5. However, it may indeed be the case that not all of them will be able to be played on the new system, at least not at launch. It is unclear whether this includes games further back in the console library, like the PS3. But, this could be a major let down for fans who just want to be able to play games they’ve already bought.

How are you feeling about this? Looking forward to the PS5? Let us know in the comments!
