It’s been four years since the release of Mad Max: Fury Road. Nominated for best picture at the 2016 Academy Awards, the movie stunned audiences with its hard-hitting action sequences. Fans have been eager for a follow up to the massively successful film, but we’re still no closer to that coming to pass.

However, this may not be the case for too much longer. Speaking recently with Deadline, director George Miller claimed he was “not done with the Mad Max Story” yet. Miller is currently about to begin production on Three Thousand Years of Longing. The film stars Idris Elba and Tilda Swinton and will enter production in March. What appears to be the case is that we may be seeing the followup to Mad Max: Fury Road afterward.

Mad Max Will Come Back!

Last Summer, Miller was firm on the idea that sequels to the 2015 blockbuster were “going to happen.” However, news has not been forthcoming since that statement. So, it would have been safe to say that the franchise was on ice. But, this interview kindles a little hope that the series is on its way back.

In the article mentioned above, Miller states:

“I’m not done with the Mad Max story and I think you have to be a multi-tasker and there’s certainly another Mad Max coming down the pike after this. We’re in preparation on that as well.”

Mad Max

This appears to a clear yes to the question: Is Mad Max coming back? However, it is not clear whether the funding and beginning of pre-production are in mind yet. So, it is coming back, but it may be a while off yet.

Elaborating on the “multi-tasker” point, Miller had this to say:

“The more different the films are, the more interesting that is. A really good example: I was working on Happy Feet Two while Fury Road was getting up and then falling down. They couldn’t have been more different. One was animation, the other live action. It worked for me.”

In other words, Miller is working on an in-between project while he develops the rumored sequels and Furiosa spin-offs to his beloved franchise. Either way, we’ll be here when it’s time to return to the wasteland.

Fan off, Mad Max? Hoping these sequels come to light? Let us know in the comments!
