Since the character was introduced in Marvel’s The Avengers in 2012, fans have been aching to see a solo Black Widow movie. Now, a few phases of the Marvel Cinematic Universe have passed, and finally, it’s set to release in 2020.

But despite being a prequel, Black Widow will have more of an impact on the overall MCU than you may think. Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige was at Brazil’s CCXP recently and spoke to Buzzfeed Brazil about the Scarlett Johansson-led super-film:

We knew we were going to kick off Phase 4 with her standalone movie, finally, and reveal parts of her past that we’ve never known before that will not only inform the way we saw her in the Avengers films but much of the MCU going forward

The idea that a prequel like Black Widow could shine a light on the path ahead for the MCU is an interesting one. Of course, Feige may not necessarily mean it in a story-based way. He could mean it on a thematic level. After all, Black Widow features a little fewer superpowers and a more personal story. Could we be seeing more grounded MCU stories in the future after the cosmic shenanigans of Avengers: Endgame?

Black Widow

Black Widow is set shortly after the events of 2016’s Captain America: Civil War. In it, Natasha Romanov finds herself alone and forced to confront her past as a Russian KGB agent. During the adventure, she comes across old allies and other Black Widows from her days in training. The Taskmaster, a villain capable of imitating his opponent’s fighting moves, is expected to play a significant role in the film.

Are you looking forward to watching Black Widow? How do you think it’ll impact the MCU as a whole? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
