The Witcher, one of Netflix’s most wildly popular shows, already has a spinoff in the works. Earlier this week, Netflix announced that The Witcher universe would be expanding in an anime film entitled The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf.

The plot of The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf is still somewhat of a mystery, but Netflix said it is “exploring a powerful new threat facing the Continent.”  Based on this description, fans speculate that this film will not follow the main storyline, but may focus on a side-quest storyline instead.

Showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich and producer Beau DeMayo will be heavily involved in the spinoff, and Studio Mir, the Korean animation studio behind The Legend of Korra and Voltron: Legendary Defenders, will handle the animation. It is still unknown whether or not the live-action cast will voice their characters in the anime spinoff.

Rumors started to spread about the anime adaptation before Netflix officially announced it on their Twitter this past Wednesday. The rumor was first discussed on a fansite called Renadian Intelligence before io9 picked up the story. Shortly after, Netflix made its official (yet brief) statement.

As of this writing, a release window for The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf has not been officially announced. The first season of The Witcher television series is available in full on Netflix, and season two is set to release sometime in 2021. Fans can fill the void with the popular video games or read the eight-book series written by Andrzej Sapkowski. Check out our by-episode reviews here!
