Ooh dear, the Obi-Wan Kenobi series has been paused, pushed back, delayed, scuppered or whatever term you’d like to use. The reasons for this appear to be a change in the creative team. Writer Hossein Amini is no longer involved, with the scripts that are currently written being scrapped altogether. SlashFilm report that this is partly to shorten the series from six episodes to four.
Keeping fairly calm about the news Ewan McGregor, returning to the helm as Obi-Wan Kenobi, insisted that the shake-up is not as dramatic as it would appear. “I didn’t realize until we got here tonight and everybody is going, ‘Oh, my god!’ But it’s not really as dramatic as it might seem,” McGregor told Variety at a press event for his new film, Birds Of Prey.
In fact, it is McGregor who provided a new hope that the delay isn’t actually that. Filming was due to start this summer, and will instead be pushed back to early 2021. This should mean the series will still grace our screens on time.
“I think we start early next year as opposed to summer this year. I think the scripts are great. They’re in really good shape. They want them to be better. I think we keep our same airdate. All good,”
It may simply be that the announcement of the series came far too early in an attempt to build steam for Disney+, the streaming service which the show will air. Had the announcement not taken place in summer the reworking of scripts would have been unknown, making for quite the slow news day.
Anyway, in other interesting Star Wars news, Colin Trevorrow has confirmed some of the unused concept art from his pitch for Star Wars: Episode IX. Titled Dual of the Fates the concept looks like it would have taken characters in a very different direction.
