Sony Will Reportedly Launch PSVR 2 After PS5

Sonyโ€™s VR platform will probably be entering a new generation with PSVR 2, releasing sometime after PS5.

Sonyโ€™s VR platform will probably be entering a new generation with PSVR 2, releasing sometime after PS5.

PlayStation VR was a great move by Sony during the current generation of gaming platforms, raising hopes for the steady continuation of VR games in the industry. Although the PSVR launch didnโ€™t seem to be promising enough, the more time passed, the more quality games appeared from the companyโ€™s first-party studios. Astro Bot: Rescue Mission and Blood & Truth proved that a group of talented people are supporting PSVR and brightened the future of the platform.

With the next-gen gaming platform arriving later this year, it remains a mystery of how the VR headsets are supposed to change. Last year, Oculus revealed its new platforms for VR gaming, including fully wireless Oculus Quest received a warm reception from gamers. HTC, the other competitor in the industry, unveiled Vive Cosmos with significantly improved design and display capabilities. Valve, of course, jumped into the competition with Valve Index and a huge game for its launch, which is Half-Life: Alyx. Of course, we shouldnโ€™t under-estimate PSVR, but it has to get under a massive upgrade by Sony to be able to have something to say in the rivalry with the other VR hardware supporters.

Blood and Truth

According to a report by Bloomberg, Sony does have serious plans for PSVR 2 and will be launching it sometime after PS5, to lower the costs for the new consoleโ€™s launch and set a reasonable price on it. Previously, Sony had confirmed that they wouldnโ€™t release PSVR 2 along with PS5, which makes Bloombergโ€™s report sound more trustworthy.

Itโ€™s worth noting that PS5 will be supporting the current-gen PlayStation VR at launch, which probably means the backward compatibility of the console will also be available day one.

PlayStation 5 is set to be launched in Holiday 2020, and more details about the console are expected to be revealed soon.
