The Shattering, a new psychological thriller developed by Super Sexy Software, is out today on Steam and GOG.

The Shattering is an indie thriller coated in a white aesthetic. Instead of horror deriving from darkness and the unseen, The Shattering makes all hauntingly bright and visible. Although a first-person title, the game won’t be throwing atrocities your way. This is psychological horror; what you see will be subtle, but still make you tense, disturbed, and afraid.

A big draw of The Shattering is the narrative. You play as John as he relives pivotal moments in his life. You will hunt for the truth of what happened to John in the present by exploring his past. The story will be split into five different acts, and each act will contain information about the past and present simultaneously.

The game also features an incredibly dynamic and engaging score. Changing to match the moment, the score for The Shattering can be beautiful or intense. And, as we know, every good thriller and horror game needs a good soundtrack.

The Shattering is the first title from developer Super Sexy Software. In fact, it is actually a passion project from a group of five friends. Since 2013, The Shattering has been in the works ever since Marta Szymańska conjured up the concept. Her study of contrast between white and black in horror entertainment games and culture provided the foundation for the game’s aesthetic. Her studies also ensure familiarity with the genre, which implies an ability to scare us all properly.

Deck13 Interactive, which you may associate with such titles as The Surge and Lords of the Fallen, is publishing the title. The Shattering is part of the “Deck13 Spotlight” label, an initiative to support indie developers.

You can pick up The Shattering on Steam or GOG for $19.99. Wait, scratch that! The game is already 10% off, making the total cost $17.99!

When I'm not playing the latest titles or replaying Dark Souls for the umpteenth time, I am usually trying to write my novel or write and edit for clients as a freelancer.
