Assassin’s Creed Valhalla developers might want to slow down on the hype train after Thursday’s showing during the Inside Xbox event. After weeks of expectations over the first glimpse of the title’s gameplay, the long-promised trailer failed to deliver.

Having already delivered a theatrical trailer as part of Valhalla’s reveal, Ubisoft promised fans would get to see what the game looks like when it’s in action during the Xbox Series X event. While the video did technically show the game running, it became clear quickly what was being shown was cinematics. Cut scenes, in other words.

As ScreenRant points out, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla looks very good. A game headed to the Xbox Series X better look good. Ubisoft didn’t accomplish anything by offering up a pretty trailer. Every trailer for the event was pretty. The difference between Chorvs and Valhalla is the world needed to be introduced to the former for the first time, while we’ve known the latter was coming for a while now.

Microsoft didn’t help the cause when it continued hyping the impending release of gameplay while announcing other titles. Having a chyron tease the viewing public about what they were about to see only works if you deliver on the tease.

Instead, we saw a few Viking axes being thrown around, the raven familiar was got a look at in the theatrical trailer and a couple of shots of the rafters in Viking settlements. That last bit seems to indicate the Assassin part of Assassin’s Creed isn’t going away entirely.

Still, fans wanted to see an Assassin in action in Valhalla, not a cinematic hint of what’s to come.

The good news for fans of the game who were expecting to get a better look is this is certainly not going to be the last trailer released. However, Ubisoft hasn’t said when we can expect more – or actual – gameplay moving forward.

Assassin’s Creed Valhalla launches this Holiday season on the PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox One Series X, and Google Stadia.
