Cobra Kai is moving from YouTube to Netflix for its third season. The upcoming installment of the hit original series, which is a continuation of the beloved film franchise The Karate Kid, will be produced as a Netflix original.

With YouTube officially out of the scripted space, it announced that it would be moving to a different streaming platform for its third season. On Monday, it was announced that Cobra Kai had found its new home on Netflix with Sony Pictures Television reaching an agreement with the streaming giants.

The series takes place 30 years after the events of the 1984 All Valley Karate Tournament. Daniel LaRusso is a successful adult who is finding it difficult to maintain balance in his life without Mr. Miyagi. He’s challenged by former rival Johnny Lawrence, who hopes to redeem their reputation by reopening the Cobra Kai karate dojo. Original stars Ralph Macchio and William Zabka reprise their roles as Daniel and Johnny, respectively.

Netflix has acquired the first three seasons of the Karate Kid sequel starring Ralph Macchio and William Zabka. The first two seasons, which aired on YouTube in 2018 and 2019, will make their debut on Netflix later this year. The third season of the drama from Sony Pictures Television will premiere on Netflix, on a yet-to-be-determined date, while the first two seasons, which aired on YouTube in 2018 and 2019, will also be made available on Netflix later this year.

Cobra Kai is the third YouTube scripted original to find a new home after YouTube changed its business model from a subscription to an ad-supported platform. Now with Cobra Kai‘s move to Netflix completed, YouTube is officially out of the scripted business.

Speaking of the upcoming season of the comedy show, Brian Wright, Netflix VP of Originals, said the following:

The appeal of the Karate Kid saga is timeless, and Cobra Kai picks up right where it left off without missing a beat. We can’t wait to introduce a new generation of fans to Cobra Kai and are thrilled to be its new home around the world.”
