Gamescom showed off a lot of exciting footage from various videogames – but the force was particularly strong with one game trailer. In the latest trailer for Star Wars: Squadrons, we are given a first glimpse at the game’s Single Player Campaign. Narrated by Susanne Hunka, Narrative Producer at developer Motive, the footage shows off an early Imperial mission behind enemy lines.

The footage shows off the game’s impressive visuals and sound design, immersing you right into the world of Star Wars. This is further aided by the restrictive cockpit perspective, which makes you feel like an Imperial remnant fighting the New Republic in space. It causes you to wonder just how the game feels when you actually put on the VR headset, given how visceral the trailer is.

The story is set after the destruction of the second Death Star in Return of the Jedi. In it, you alternate control between two customizable pilots who fight for the New Republic’s Vanguard Squadron and the Empire’s Titan Squadron.

The team at Motive worked with the Story Group at Lucasfilm Ltd in an effort to craft a narrative that “fits well in the Star Wars galaxy and tells a tale that was pivotal to the war effort on both sides”. While the player knows how things end for the Empire, the characters in the story are still uncertain. The rebels have built a legitimate government – the New Republic – but the Empire is still intent on destroying them. Yet, the Empire’s ranks are conflicted as to how to do it.

Star Wars: Squadrons

Among the other modes on offer in Star Wars: Squadrons are Dogfight and Fleet Battles. The former has ten players face off against each other in teams while the latter gives teams the goal of destroying the opposite side’s flagship. Are you looking forward to Star Wars: Squadron‘s Single Player campaign? Sound off in the comments below.
