Minecraft on PlayStation 4 is getting a new update that adds PS VR support. Everyone who has Minecraft will be able to download and get the Minecraft VR patch automatically, even if you don’t have a PS VR. Although Mojang hasn’t told us when exactly the patch will be available to download, just promised that it’s coming “this month”.

Mojang confessed that they have been planning to add PS VR support for Minecraft since Sony allowed the game to have cross-play and the Bedrock version came to PlayStation 4. This new feature is based on the tech Mojang has developed for other VR platforms. Then their console developer partner, SkyBox Labs, managed to “convert and optimize” the existing tech for PS VR.

With this new feature, there will be a host of new settings that lets you tweak the experience to your needs. One of them is the two ways you can play the game in VR: Immersive and Living Room modes.

The Immersive mode is your standard VR experience, you play the game directly with all the new bell-and-whistles and will make you feel as though you are inside the game. Meanwhile, if you choose to play through the Living Room mode, you will instead be transported into a virtual room where you can play Minecraft on a virtual screen in it. It sounds like a roundabout way to enjoy this feature but I suspect the latter option is better for those that suffer from motion sickness.

On PC, Minecraft VR can be played officially through Gear VR, Oculus Rift, and Windows Mixed Reality headset since at least 2016. Along with this VR update, Mojang is planning to run the fully-digital Minecraft Live event next month to show off more upcoming updates as well as celebrating the Japanese community in Tokyo Game Show 2020.
