“X-Men: Apocalypse” director Bryan Singer revealed that a crossover film between the X-Men and Fantastic Four film franchises is in the work.

In a recent interview with Yahoo Movies, the director stated that a film crossover event will partially depend on the success of “X-Men: Apocalypse,” which is due out on May 27th, 2015. This next installment in the X-Men franchise follows Magneto, Professor X, and Mystique as they confront the very first ancient mutant called Apocalypse.

However, Singer did confirm that such a film is in the works. ““Those ideas are in play… That would be a natural match-up because they’re both ensemble films and there is a natural mechanism by which to do it… It deals with time. That’s all I’m going to say.”

Singer seemingly took a little jab at Marvel in the following quote: “We have to see how the films turn out — how this film turns out, how ‘Fantastic Four’ plays, to really understand what kind of desire and how that would really work. I think to just say you’re gonna do it is a mistake. You have to see how the films evolve before you make the decision to completely commit to that.”

The success of “Fantastic Four,” which hits theaters on August 7th, is probably the bigger concern for Fox, as problems on set with director Josh Trank and lack of marketing throughout the year have seemingly told audiences that the studio does not have faith in the film to succeed both financially and critically.

Singer stated that there is a “natural mechanism” in uniting the two film franchises, which sounds much more interesting than the planned, but equally satisfying universes of DC and Marvel.

A  shared universe between these films sounds logical on paper, but the stars and faces of the franchise are the biggest in Hollywood, and the likes of Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult, Channing Tatum, Michael Fassbender, and Ryan Reynolds indicate that there will be quite a few busy schedules to work around.
