Fresh on the heels of the premiere of Pixels, Cinemaplex has put together a compilation of the best and worst video game films have to offer. Titled ‘Ready Player One’ the Youtube video cheats a little bit: Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, Gamer, Tron: Legacy, and Wreck-It Ralph aren’t exactly adaptations of any specific video game, but rather influenced by them. The most popular video game movie franchises are there including Resident Evil, Silent Hill, and Tomb Raider.

Disastrous Mark Wahlberg vehicle Max Payne gets it’s time to shine as does the so-bad-it’s-good Mortal Kombat films. The supercut still feels slightly incomplete. The Doom film is nowhere to be seen, even though it has its own first person action sequence. Also, Uwe Boll may not have a single movie in the cut. Uwe Boll has made a heap of video game movies including Postal, FarCry (yes really), and Bloodrayne along with its sequels.

While watching the supercut I didn’t feel that it was an accurate representation of video games. Video game movies? Maybe, but even though many don’t believe video games can transition into movies, it seems like a problem on the movie end. These films just can’t seem accurately portray the world of the games. There has been a dry spell concerning game-based movies, with the exception of a Resident Evil film every other year, but rumors show that many are in the pipeline. Uncharted, Metal Gear Solid, and Assassin’s Creed are slated for film adaptation and many more are on their way. Sony has been teasing both a Ratchet and Clank film and a Sly Cooper feature. Ubisoft is trying to get ahead of the game and have already begun to make plans for film adaptations of their intellectual properties.
