2K Games officially announced Mafia III on Tuesday, July 28th, via an image on Twitter. The image shows four silhouetted figures in front of their vehicles overlooking a bog, marsh, swamp, or tar pit (the image is dark). It’s only a teaser image, more details will be revealed at Gamescom in August. The teaser image sets August 8th at 8:00 AM as the worldwide reveal for the heavily anticipated project. Of the four figures in the image, one of them is distinctly female while the others appear to be male. Will all four be playable characters? Is Mafia III biting off GTAV? The world will find out next week at Gamescom.
The official website doesn’t give much away, but confirms that the developer is Hangar 13. Hangar 13 is the super-secretive new studio under 2K games that nabbed Haden Blackman as the leader. In an interview with Gamespot in December Blackman stated that the studio was working with proprietary tech and that the choices made in their “first game” will impact the moment-to-moment gameplay.
Blackman had more to say:
“The player story and the player experience, not just the narrative, at both the micro level–the moment-to-moment choices they make–to the macro as well. How am I affecting the world, how am I impacting the characters around me. How does that in turn change my gameplay experience.”
All signs point to Hangar 13’s first game being Mafia III and hopefully fans will get to learn more about this proprietary tech in Germany next week. 2K have been tight-lipped on next installment in the IP, but released a simple statement after the Twitter announcement.
“Mafia III is the next installment in the popular series known for immersing players into a world of organized crime through rich narrative storytelling and a beautifully crafted game world featuring period-accurate cars, music, and fashion.”
It’s going to be a long week.
