Science fiction veteran and former X-Men scribe, Simon Kinberg, has signed on to pen a Battlestar Galactica movie for Universal Pictures.
The news was recently confirmed by Variety. Aside from X-Men, Kinberg also had a hand in Deadpool (2016) and Josh Trank’s less-than-impressive 2015 re-imagining of the Fantastic Four. There’s no doubt though that Battlestar Galactica will bring with it a new level of expectation with the franchise being considered a classic in the world of sci-fi since its inception in the 1970s, created by Glen A. Larson. The franchise was rebooted in the 2000s with a successful Hugo and Emmy-winning mini-series and spinoff TV shows Caprica and Blood and Chrome.
The movie isn’t the only Battlestar Galactica project in development. Mr. Robot creator Sam Esmail and Michael Lesslie (Assassin’s Creed) are also working on a series for NBCUniversal’s streaming service, Peacock:
The elusive Battlestar Galactica movie has had plenty of big names attached to it over the years. Some names include Bryan Singer (X-Men) and Francis Lawrence (The Hunger Games), but things have fallen through with each of them at some point. Let’s hope that the movie has found the perfect scribe in Kinberg.
Kinberg is clearly passionate about the franchise and seems like he can’t wait to get started. In a statement with The Hollywood Reporter, he said the following:
Battlestar Galactica is one of the holy grails in science fiction, and I couldn’t be more excited about bringing something new to the franchise, while honoring what’s made it so iconic and enduring. I’m so grateful that Dylan and my partners at Universal have trusted me with this incredible universe.”
Joining him in the development of the movie is Dylan Clark (The Batman, War for the Planet of the Apes). Clarke has long been attached to the project. Before we get this movie, we still have Kinberg’s upcoming spy comedy The 355 to look forward to as well. It’s set to release early next year.
What do you think of the upcoming Battlestar Galactica movie? Are you still invested in the franchise? Let me know!
