Dark secrets lie behind the wonders and mysteries within Norse Mythology. This brings a heroine to the front lines of mystic mayhem in Gunnhildr. This rogue-lite from RatDog Games takes the tales of Norse legends and mixes it with FPS action. When it comes to Norse Mythology, the idea of guns is nearly nonexistent for magic, swords, and gods and men are the usual factors in combat. But in Gunnhildr, shooting makes a major appearance.

The narrative trailer features rocking music to the various clips of DOOM-esque gameplay and awe-inspiring backdrops. As the titular heroine, you can jump and dash to gain higher advantages over your adversaries.

Witchcraft, Wizardy, and Hellish Weaponry

Leading a charge against The Elders of Niflheim, Gunnhildr aims to survive until the bitter end. The tale begins after Gunnhildr is exiled due to a failed mission to get help from the Gods. Niflheim’s raw material of Halite is running severely low, marking the planet as unworthy. Proclaiming damnation on Gunnhildr, it’s here where guns and bullets are traded mid-air with magic and corruption.

Gunnhildr’s Development State

Gunnhildr is currently in development by RatDog Games. This indie studio originally formed because of a shared interest in FPS, RPGs, and rogue-lites among a small group of friends. Their common passion would bring them to the idea of Gunnhildr and its creation. Now, the game is in Early Access on Steam, with community support being a big factor toward its PC launch. Andrew DeSilva, founder and designer at RatDog Games, commented on the game’s Early Access release:

We are bringing this game to Early Access because, as a Roguelite, we have the opportunity to build and balance it alongside our community. Gunnhildr is already a solid first-person shooter based on our own original storyline, which is told mainly through voice-over narration. We are bringing Gunnhildr to Early Access so that we may receive feedback, make sure the game is as fun as possible and know which direction the community wants us to take with the project. What we build is dependent on your feedback, and we’ll be paying attention both here and over on our Discord channel.”

Gunnhildr can be experienced now by going onto the game’s Steam page for $14.99. Presently, the game has 5 of 12 planned weapon types, 39 of 150 planned Power-Ups, and 1 of 4 planned environments. More will be added before its official launch next year in 2021.
