Red Dead Online standalone GTA
This article is over 4 years old and may contain outdated information.

Rockstar has announced that it will be releasing a standalone version of Red Dead Online on the PlayStation Store, Microsoft Store, and PC via the Rockstar Games Launcher, Epic Games Store, and Steam on December 1. The PS4 and Xbox One versions will be playable via backward compatibility on PS5 or Xbox Series X. I’m surprised Rockstar made standalone Red Dead Online first before GTA Online, which comes much later in “the second half of 2021“. Especially considering it made GTA V be one of the best selling games in 2019.

This standalone version will be available for $4.99 until February 15, 2021. After the 75% off launch price ends it will be sold for $19.99. It will include an option to unlock Red Dead Redemption 2 Story Mode as a separate purchase, all existing gameplay upgrades and content Red Dead Online has to offer, as well as access to all future content updates such as the upcoming 10 Rank expansion for the Bounty Hunter Role. But there’s one thing to take note of: even though the story mode isn’t included, Red Dead Online standalone is still going to take a huge amount of your hard disk space, requiring up to 123GB for installation.

Red Dead Online

Coming next week, the Red Dead Online Bounty Hunters Expansion will include new Prestigious level equipment and skills to unlock, as well as new bounty targets including Legendary Bounties, and a new 100 Rank Outlaw Pass. As a bonus, all Bounty Hunter Missions are awarding double XP in Red Dead Online this week, alongside additional bonuses and discounts, including:

  • Increased RDO$ and XP for all Posse members on Free Roam Missions, Bounty Missions, and Free Roam Events.
  • Double XP in all A Land of Opportunities missions and Bounty Hunter missions.
  • Discounts in the Wheeler, Rawson & Co. Catalogue.
  • New Prime Gaming Benefits, including a free Breton Horse, RDO$100, Katata Coat, 6,000 Naturalist XP, a Wilderness Camp, and five Legendary Animal Pheromones.

I’m pretty intrigued with this offering since I haven’t played Red Dead, barely touched GTA V single-player, and wasted 287 hours in Online with friends. Still, 123GB is a massive investment for me. What about you though? Will more of your friends be getting Red Dead Online standalone instead? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
