AMC’s The Walking Dead is known for many things — comedy is not one of them. The horror franchise has been on our screens for over a decade now, and in that time, we’ve seen a lot of terrifying and highly emotional things go down. One thing we very rarely see is a comedic side to the world. Apparently, that is about to change. AMC Chief Content Officer Scott Gimple recently revealed plans for a comedy spinoff. This is no joke.
The Walking Dead is currently on a break before it returns for six additional season 10 episodes in February. Excitingly, one of these episodes will be a Negan origin story. While we do not know exactly what the rest of them will entail, we do have a short teaser.

Since the mother show is set to conclude with season 11, AMC has a slate of spinoff shows lined up, with Scott Gimple in charge. So far, we have the successful Fear the Walking Dead and the latest spinoff, The Walking Dead: World Beyond. Confirmed shows in the pipeline include a Daryl-Carol show and an anthology series titled Tales of The Walking Dead. There is even a trilogy of Rick Grimes movies in the works. Now we can add a mysterious zombie comedy to that list.
During the AMC+ streaming exclusive The Walking Dead Holiday Special, Gimple revealed his plans to take the franchise in an uncharacteristic comedy foray. “We are working on a straight Walking Dead comedy right now,” he said (via ComicBook.com).

Since it is still early days in development, we do not know whether it will be a movie or a series. It’s also worth noting that nothing has been ordered yet, so it might not happen at all!
It remains to be seen how The Walking Dead Universe will translate into comedy. The zombie genre has seen some successful comedic takes in the past. The Zombieland movies prove that it can be done right. And then there’s Edgar Wright’s classic, Shaun of the Dead. Maybe the spinoff can take some inspiration from what has come before.
