That’s right Meat Boys and Bandage Girls! Just like nothing can keep Meat Boy from his love, it seems nothing can ultimately keep Team Meat, comprised of Super Meat Boy creators Edmund McMillen and Tommy Refenes, from returning to their famous platformer. Five years ago, they swore there would be no sequel for Super Meat Boy, but in an interview with Game Informer, it seems they may be changing their tune.

Currently, McMillen and Refenes have been working on Super Meat Boy Forever, an upcoming mobile game. It was during this process that they paused and reconsidered the idea of a Super Meat Boy sequel.

“What we talked about was possibly working on a sequel, and it’s something that I like a lot. There were aspects of Forever that were moves that Meat Boy did…that we were prototyping that felt like they could be better used in a sequel. The future of Meat Boy is definitely up in the air, but a sequel is something that I wouldn’t be opposed to doing even though we both said that we wouldn’t do it.”

Their original motives for not doing a sequel boil down to this:

  1. Digging into characters’ origin stories may be messy in a bad way, even for this messy, meaty game.
  2. They nailed the game the first time around. It doesn’t need redeeming through a sequel.
  3. Because fans can already make their own levels, a sequel seems like a moot point. And a money scheme.

(If you want to read their explanation, you can check out Team Meat’s blog, where they addressed the issue in full.)

They did add at the end of the blog entry that “just because we say there wont be any sequels to super meat boy… doesn’t mean you’ll never see the characters again.”

Now to all hopeful fans who are excited at the prospect of a Super Meat Boy sequel, Team Meat is saying, “We wouldn’t even be mentioning anything about a sequel if we didn’t feel like it was realistic enough.”

Hey, that’s hope enough for me.
