It’s official – Snowpiercer is receiving a third season. The announcement was made by TNT via press release today. The news comes ahead of Snowpiercer‘s second season premiere on Monday January, 25 ET/PT on TNT.

Season Two follows on from the first season’s cliffhanger. Melanie (Jennifer Connelly) discovers that Mr. Wilford (Sean Bean), worshiped by many as a visionary who protected the last remnants of humanity, is alive and headed the group’s way on a rival train. This is awkward, given Melanie believed she’d left him to die at boarding the Snowpiercer. However, he survived aboard the Big Alice supply train.

Sean Bean joins the cast in Season 2 of Snowpiercer

Season Two sees a power struggle between leader Andre Layton (Daveed Diggs) and Mr. Wilford. The outcome of the struggle will ultimately decide the soul of the Snowpiercer. Meanwhile, Melanie happens upon a shocking discovery that could change the fate of the survivors.

It’s fair to say that Snowpiercer has been a successful IP for TNT. The show debuted with 3.3 million total viewers across TNT and TB, as the #1 cable entertainment program. The show is based not on the 2013 film of the same name, but rather its source material – the French graphic novel Le Transperceneige created by Jacques Lob and Jean-Marc Rochette. Said graphic novel later received an English translation in 2014 by Titan Comics, split between two volumes, followed later by a third part and a prequel comic in 2019.

Snowpiercer hasn’t only been a hit with the viewers – it’s also generally favorable among critics. Season One garnered a 61% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with the consensus stating, “Snowpiercer takes a different route with its source material, crafting an ambitious sci-fi mystery with style to spare, but with little of the subversive bite of Bong Joon-ho’s theatrical adaptation.”

Are you hyped for the second season premiere of Snowpiercer? What are your thoughts on the show so far? Be sure to let us know all about it in the comments below…
