Well, that’s a big change. As we reported not too long ago, Andrew Spinks, the co-creator of Terraria, the 2D building and adventuring game (look, we’ve all heard the Minecraft comparisons by now) released a series of posts on Twitter detailing his outrage at Google for seemingly locking him out of of his account for apparently no clear reason at all, denying access to not only YouTube and purchased movies – he was watching through the Lord of the Rings at the time – it also locked him out of his Google Drive and Gmail – things you’d expect to be quite useful when handling the development of a popular game.

Stadia, terraria

Now though, recent developments have led to the Google Stadia version of Terraria being back on the horizon, as detailed in the latest State of the Game forum post on the official Terraria forums. Google’s action to fix that whole mess has led to a reconsideration of the Stadia version cancellation, and now that version is back in development and is currently with Google for certification.

As you may have noticed, we had a ton of issues to kick off the year stemming from the locking-down of Redigit’s entire Google account in early January. After a month of pushing (and with the immense support of our fans), Google finally reached out and was able to provide a lot of transparency around the situation and to restore access to all of our accounts. Due to the hard work the Stadia team has put in – as well as our partners at 505 Games – we have decided that we will allow the upcoming launch Terraria on Google Stadia to proceed. The Terraria Stadia build is based on the DR Studios 1.4.0.5 (latest) build, and is currently at Google for certification review.”

– Google account/Stadia Update, February 2021

It’s certainly positive news, especially given the unfortunate series of events that preceded this U-turn. It will be one of more than 100 games coming to the streaming platform in 2021, which is even more vital given the fact that Google recently shut down Stadia’s first-party studios. Terraria, meanwhile, has become one of the most full-featured games with updates since the game launched in 2011. Its final update, named Journey’s End, completes a nine-year journey with tons of bosses, weapons, and armor sets added post-launch.

What do you think of the situation? Are you excited for Terraria’s release on Google Stadia? Let us know in the comments below!
