Perhaps it’s an easy joke to make, but shouldn’t the headline read 500,000 sales instead of a million? Well, for all those who know you can play through Hazelight’s new co-op platformer It Takes Two on your own makes that joke a bit redundant – although it’s still a very commendable achievement nonetheless to sell a million copies in such a short space of time. If our review is anything to go by, then it’s well deserved.
It Takes Two is the latest creation from developer Hazelight, who found breakout success from A Way Out, which featured an innovative dual control system where you (and in the case of A Way Out and It Takes Two, both published by EA under their EA Originals label, a mandatory friend – there’s no single-player option here) take control of two characters simultaneously and navigate your way through a series of puzzles designed to take advantage of this unique way of playing.
Announced in a tweet, the founder of Hazelight, Josef Fares (who worked on Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons, which also had a dual-character control system like his other games) also tweeted that there would still be room in the industry for co-op-only games. Fares has become a legend in the industry for his unscripted passion, most notably when he unveiled A Way Out for the first time at EA’s E3 2017 press conference, and when he took a swing at the Oscars in a viral clip during the Game Awards later that year.

With It Takes Two‘s unquestioned success, it naturally leads into questions of what comes next. Will it be another co-op-focused title? It makes sense to keep doing what you know best, but when we find out, we’ll let you know.
