Fans have wanted to see David Ramsey’s John Diggle / Spartan become the Arrowverse Green Lantern for years. Those hopes were raised by a cliffhanger in the Arrow series finale but it looks like that was in vain.
Ramsey is set to direct and guest star in several episodes across DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, Batwoman, Flash, Superman & Lois, and Supergirl. Ahead of that, the actor spoke to TVLine and gave an update on what happened after that particular scene.
The last time we saw John Diggle, he was leaving for Metropolis when a strange glowing green box crashed down from outer space. Fans believed that this was the moment Diggle took up the mantle of the Arrowverse Green Lantern but unfortunately, it looks like this wasn’t the case.
“To your other point, which is exploring what has happened to Diggle since encountering that green box,” Ramsey said. “That will be explored in the other episodes – on Batwoman, Flash, Superman & Lois, and Supergirl. Whatever was in the box, he refused the invitation of. Let’s put it like that. But there are consequences to that.”
So it looks like we won’t see Ramsey in a green animated suit anytime soon. Of course, there’s always the Green Lantern HBO Max series starring Finn Wittrock in a lead role. That gives the fans something to hold on to.
In any case, Ramsey did offer a pretty good explanation for Diggle refusing to become a Green Lantern. He further explained:
We’ve gone to great lengths over the years to make Diggle one of the more grounded characters. Any time he would go fast with Flash, he would throw up, and he was always amazed when he saw someone flying. All these things were kind of otherworldly to him because he was a very earthbound hero. And after Crisis, he got back his wife, who was abducted by the Monitor, and he got back his daughter Sara, who was taken out of existence by Flashpoint. So part of Diggle’s story is that the last thing he would want to do right now is receive an invitation from something otherworldly, because he finally has his family back, and he lost his best friend to some otherworldliness. So he refused the invitation of whatever was in the box, but there are consequences to that, and that story, what he will do next, is part of what we tell throughout these four episodes.”
David Ramsey’s Arrowverse return begins May 25, with the episode of Superman & Lois that he directed. His first guest appearance will be on Batwoman on Sunday, June 13.
