Fans of Capcom’s iconic Resident Evil video game franchise who are eagerly awaiting the upcoming live-action movie adaptation Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City have their first look at the movie, which Screen Gems confirmed is an origin story of the original games.

Undead Reunion

IGN has revealed three images from Welcome to Raccoon City.

One image shows Avan Jogia (Zombieland: Double Tap) as Leon S. Kennedy and Kaya Scodelario (Crawl, The Maze Runner films) as Claire Redfield. Both characters are seen walking through a dimly lit corridor and look similar to their counterparts from the Resident Evil 2 video game.

Another image depicts Tom Hopper (Game of Thrones, The Umbrella Academy) as Albert Wesker, Chad Rook (The Flash, War for the Planet of the Apes) as Richard Aiken, Hannah John-Kamen (Ant-Man and the Wasp, Ready Player One) as Jill Valentine, and Robbie Amell (The Flash, The Babysitter films) as Chris Redfield. All four characters are in their Special Tactics and Rescue Service (S.T.A.R.S.) attire and are investigating the Spencer Mansion from the first game.

The last image gives us an ominous look at Marina Mazepa (The Unholy, Malignant) as Lisa Trevor. Fans of the game will know that Lisa is the daughter of the Spencer Mansion architect who the Umbrella Corporation kidnapped and experimented on, thus turning her into a horrifying creature.

Bringing New Life to the Dead

Writer/director Johannes Roberts (47 Meters Down, The Strangers: Prey at Night) told IGN that he took inspiration from both the first two games and genre filmmaking. He also talked about working with Capcom to create a more faithful adaptation of the Resident Evil games than what Paul W.S. Anderson had released.

“The previous movies were very bright and shiny whereas this movie was dark and grimy, entirely shot at night. It’s constantly raining and the town is shrouded in mist,” explained Roberts. “We worked hand in hand with Capcom on this movie to the point that we actually got blueprints from them on the designs of the Spencer Mansion and Raccoon police station in order to recreate them as perfectly as we could. We even have the exact artwork up on the mansion walls. Capcom saw it for the first time the other day and was so happy and excited.”

The Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City movie hits North American theaters on November 24, 2021.
