After being cancelled more than eleven years ago, NBC is finally reviving the original Law & Order series for a new season. The 21st season of Law & Order has been given a green light with the legendary creator and producer Dick Wolf returning. Joining Wolf for the new season is Rick Eid, who has served as a producer on Law & Order, its spinoffs, andย several similar shows like Chicago P.D. and FBI. Law & Order season 21 is set to further explore the classic format from the prior seasons, including both police investigations and courtroom drama.

Currently, there is no cast confirmed for Law & Order season 21. However, according to a report from Deadline, the new episodes are expected to feature the returns of several of the original show’s most beloved characters. Producers from Wolf Entertainment and Universal Television are likely to reach out to former cast members soon.

Before being canceled, Law & Order was on the verge of breaking the record for the longest-running primetime drama — a record which was previously held by Gunsmoke. However, Dick Wolf did eventually achieve his dream of beating Gunsmoke‘s record with the Law & Order spinoff series, Law & Order: SVU, which currently has 23 seasons.

The Chairman of Entertainment Content at NBCUniversal Television and Streaming, Susan Rovner, shared her excitement for Law & Order season 21, stating:

Law & Order is quite simply one of the most iconic shows in television history, and the idea of continuing its legacy and partnering with Dick on an all-new season is nothing short of exhilarating. This is great news for NBC as well as TV fans everywhere.”

The original Law & Order series was nominated for over 50 Emmy Awards and won the award for Outstanding Drama Series in 1997. The show was also responsible for changing the way networks and audiences thought about police procedurals and legal dramas.
