Microtransactions are increasingly being seen as an unnecessary expenditure for many games, especially for those spending 60 dollars on a major title. While many free to play games utilize microtransactions as a way to gain revenue, it is hard to believe that AAA companies need to charge for additional content, especially content such as character outfits, cars, etc. Well, good news is on the horizon for Star Wars Battlefront, as it will not have a microtransaction system, according to developer DICE. In a new interview with Gamespot, Design Director Niklas Fegraeus explains the use of a credit system instead:
โThe currency system is based on your game performance. The credits that you use to buy things in the game are earned. You play the game, complete challenges, and thatโs how you get credits,โ โ[Microtransactions are] not part of the core design of how it works,โ he said. โThis is a progression system based on your gameplay performance.โ
When asked if this was the only way to acquire new gear, the developer clarified โYes, thatโs whatโs in the game. Absolutely.โ Fegraeus went on the explain that there are multiple ways to earn points and credits.
โThere are several [credit] systems working together here. Just doing things in the game earns you points, and those [points] earn you credits. Thatโs the baseline system; the more you do, the more credits you get,โ he said. โBut then there are other systems, such as small challenges for you to complete, and rewards for different actions.โ
While this sounds like good news for most of us, the credit system will be interesting in terms of how it hard the challenges are, and how long it takes to achieve credits. EA has a lot riding on Star Wars: Battlefront, and theyโre probably going to try to make its launch as smooth as possible, and that includes steering clear of microtransactions.
Star Wars Battlefront ships to PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC in North America on November 17, and comes to the UK and Australia on November 19. The Star Wars Battlefront Beta begins on October 8 and runs until October 12.
I believe that games are an important form of entertainment, and that they can uplift and inspire millions of people around the world. I love JRPGs, and dabble in many other genres, especially MOBAs.
