The PlayStation 5 is still one of the most difficult-to-find consoles on the market. Released over a year ago, the supply chain is still struggling to meet the insane demand. While the semiconductor shortage is still going strong, so is the scarcity of PS5 consoles. Yet, Sony has still been investing plenty into the customizability of the console. It was reported a few months ago that Sony ordered Dbrand to stop producing PS5 side panels. Replacing the normal white color with a plethora of textures and colors, Dbrand has been doing this with all electronics for years. Yet the order to stop producing actual plates was taken seriously and now the company produces a legal Darkplates 2.0 version. Despite it already being available for pre-order, Sony has fought back with its solution. Showcased today on Twitter were new PS5 console covers introducing more colors for the console and Dualsense controller.

Will Sony’s PS5 Console Covers Be Better Than Dbrands Darkplates 2.0?
The new PS5 panels certainly brew some controversy that’s been stewing for quite some time. While fans will be quick to point out the discrepancy in prices, there’s history with this case. Seeing how Sony can now sell color panels to consumers for almost $60, the move for Sony to shut down Dbrand was clear. While their alternative is to start selling aftermarket panels with some airflow adjustments, Dbrand can no longer say they have the cheapest replacement side panels. No average consumer would want new paneling if they could just cover up the originals with decals. While the original models from Dbrand would have only cost $50, the updated Darkplates 2.0 costs almost $70. While the official PS5 console covers don’t release until late January from PS Direct, fans will just have to wait and see how they stack up to third party offerings.
