This article is over 10 years old and may contain outdated information.

Sorry, Yankees. Star Wars: The Force Awakens, the upcoming sequel to the legendary Star Wars franchise, will be streaming on Netflix only in Canada in 2016.

Because of an exclusive deal between Disney and premium cable channel Starz, Star Wars: The Force Awakens will not be streaming on Netflix. The deal between Disney and Starz covers Disney movies released before the end of the year. Star Wars: The Force Awakens will be in theaters December 18, 2015, which is 13 days shy of the deal deadline.

Subscribers to Netflix’s DVD and Blu Ray-by-mail service will still be able to rent the movie as soon as it’s released, but in order to watch it on cable, customers must have a subscription to Starz.

Star Wars' John Boyega
Relax, John Boyega. The Force Awakens will still be on Netflix… just later.

Typically new movies are streamed an average of six to eight months after their theatrical run comes to a close. According to Variety, Netflix says they’ll get Star Wars: The Force Awakens eight months after its theatrical run expires.

Netflix does not anticipate any release days for other Disney and future Star Wars films. Netflix has a deal in place with Disney to stream movies released in and after January 2016. Assuming the deal stays in place, Episode 8 (May 2017) and Episode 9 (2019) will stream on time.
