Slater is also known for serving as the head writer for the upcoming Marvel/Disney+ series Moon Knight, starring Oscar Isaac, Ethan Hawke, and the late Gaspard Ulliel, the French actor who died recently in a skiing accident. The series’ first season was completed before his death.

Slater also is in line to direct a series of other projects, such as Thread for Screen Gems, the Netflix/21 Laps film Uprising with Travis Knight directing, and the adaptation of Stephen King’s The Tommyknockers for Universal and James Wan. He also developed The Umbrella Academy for Netflix/UCP/Dark Horse and served as the creator and co-showrunner of The Exorcist on Fox.

Based on the video game phenomenon, the Mortal Kombat movie was released simultaneously in theaters and on HBO Max in April 2021, opening at No. 1 at the box office and ranking among the top features for HBO Max since the platform launched. Directed by Simon McQuoid and produced with Todd Garner, E. Bennett Walsh, and Wan, the film followed an MMA fighter who sought out Earth’s greatest champions to stand against the enemies of Outworld in a battle to save the universe.

“Sequels are a bit tricky because you can’t totally ignore them, because that wouldn’t be a smart move, but none of us used the ‘s-word.’ We’d never talk about it in any depth whatsoever because we feel like we have to put all our energy into this film. That being said, if the fans want another one, that’s not for us to decide; that’s for the fans to decide. Then we need a couple of joiner pieces that we know can lead us somewhere because there’s a treasure trove of stuff that’s just sitting there”, said McQuoid last year in an interview.

Lewis Tan, Jessica McNamee, Josh Lawson, Joe Taslim, Mehcad Brooks, Ludi Lin, Tadanobu Asano, and Chin Han also headed the cast. No other deals for the Mortal Kombat sequel have been revealed at this time.
