The world’s most popular search engine is providing a fun service that will tell users what the most popular Halloween costumes are, both locally and nationally. It’s called Frightgeist, a play on Zeitgeist, Google’s yearly search trend analysis. Under “Trending Locally,” users can scroll over certain regions to see which costume is number one in that area. “Trending Nationally” displays a list of the top costumes.

Incidentally, the current number one Halloween costume this year is Harley Quinn from Batman fame, who has become much more popular over recent years. In the number two spot are general Star Wars outfits, which seem to have declined in popularity. However, it is important to note that these trends are based on Halloween costume searches using the Google search engine, not on actual costume appearances and purchases.

Frightgeist is slightly reminiscent of an ad campaign done by Little Caesars in 2012 in which a certain commercial instructs viewers not to call a given number. Upon ignoring that advice, customers are further told not to go to a certain website. Once there, a final warning attempts to dissuade them from entering their address. Doing so presents them with their location shown on a map, haunted by ghosts.

So in the spirit of Halloween and reverse psychology, do not try out Google’s Frightgeist map, or you will be sorry!
