Quantic Dream, the team behind Heavy Rain, is usingย Detroitย and its manufacturing legacy as a backdrop for its new game,ย which isย an extension of the studio’s Kara demo from 2012.ย Karaย was a short story about an android that, once assembled, developed sentience. At the time,ย there was no promise that a game would ever be built around this story. Today at Paris Games Week, we learned thatย Quantic Dream’s new PS4 exclusive Detroit will explore what it means to be human through Kara’s story.

In the game, Detroit is referred to as an “Android City.”ย Judging by the trailer, the game looks visually stunning. We can probably assume the game will be as highly cinematic as Heavy Rain and Beyond Two Souls,ย which can be either a good or bad thing, depending on individual preference.ย

David Cageย elaborates onย Detroit, explaining:

โ€œIt was about an android who discovered she could feel emotions and appeared to be sentient,โ€ said Cage. โ€œMany people were deeply moved by this character and felt empathy for this character who just wanted to live. But everyone had the same question: what happens to Kara when she leaves the factory?โ€

โ€œWe imagined our world in a near future where androids like Kara would look, speak and move like real human beings. We wondered how we โ€“ humans โ€“ would react if we were confronted with a new form of intelligence, how androids conceived as machines would be perceived if they started to have emotions.โ€

At the very least, we can probably expect the story to be emotionally compelling. Stay tuned for details!

I believe that games are an important form of entertainment, and that they can uplift and inspire millions of people around the world. I love JRPGs, and dabble in many other genres, especially MOBAs.
