Some news came from Housemarque, the developer behind PlayStation 4 launch titleย Resogun,ย as well as Dead Nationย and the upcoming Alienation, during Sony’s press conference at Paris Games Week today. Apparently they have started development of a new gameย Matterfall.ย It must be in the very early stages of development, however, as the announcement trailer is one big CGI cutscene. That’s not to say that the trailer had no content, though. The trailer shows a futuristic cybernetic super soldier fighting what appears to enemies infected with what they’re calling “Smart Matter.” Housemarque had this to say aboutย Matterfall, “Crystalline shapes that are summoned mid-air are a staple of technology in this world and you must overcome an ever expanding threat that might have already seeped too far into the core of humanity itself.” This gives us the idea that this “Smart Matter” is some kind of living technology that went awry and started attacking the ones that created it. Cool stuff.

The art direction reminds me a lot of their latest title,ย Resogun.ย The different colored voxels of the energy weapons look very similar to the weapons that appear on your ships, as well as the voxel-based world itself. Based on the announcement trailer and press packet we received,ย Matterfallย appears to be some type of side-scrolling shooter, somewhat akin toย Strider.ย The press material states that users must “survive a unique combination of platforming and bullet hell action within a massively vertical futuristic city that is being overrun by the mysterious โSmart Matterโ.ย Players will also have the ability to manipulate the “Smart Matter” to turn the environment to their advantage.
No word on a release date as of yet, but we do know that it is scheduled to be a Playstation exclusive.
