Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) has announced today that it has acquired developer Bungie, Inc. for $3.6 billion. After the deal closes, Sony will buy Bungie and be considered an independent subsidiary, run by a board of directors consisting of current CEO and chairman Pete Parsons and the rest of the studio’s current management team.

Bungie will remain a multiplatform studio after being bought by Sony, with the option to self-publish and reach players wherever they choose. The current plans for the studio seem to be maintaining Destiny 2 and expanding the Destiny franchise while also working on a new IP.

“We’ve had a strong partnership with Bungie since the inception of the Destiny franchise, and I couldn’t be more thrilled to officially welcome the studio to the PlayStation family. This is an important step in our strategy to expand the reach of PlayStation to a much wider audience. We understand how vital Bungie’s community is to the studio and look forward to supporting them as they remain independent and continue to grow. Like Bungie, our community is core to PlayStation’s DNA, and our shared passion for the gamer and building the best place to play will now evolve even further”, said SIE president and CEO Jim Ryan.

This is the latest of several game studio acquisitions that have occurred throughout January.ย  The first was when studio Take-Two announced an agreement to acquire Zynga for roughly $12.7 billion on January 11, and Microsoft soon followed up with a $68.7 billion deal to acquire Activision Blizzard, and now, Bungie will be bought by Sony to cap off the month.

“We believe games have limitless potential, and that to do anything worthwhile in entertainment, we must bet big on our vision, on our studio, and on our incredible team of trusted creators who build unforgettable worlds that truly matter to people,” Bungie outlined in an official blog post following news od the acquisition.โ€‹
