A new ‘Goosebumps’ live-action TV series has been officially announced for Disney Plus as the streaming service has picked up the show. The Disney Plus series has a 10 episode order and will be the second live-action ‘Goosebumps’ TV series to air after its first go-through with 74 episodes in the 90s.
Talks of the new ‘Goosebumps’ TV series were brought about in April 2020 as Scholastic Entertainment and Sony Pictures Television announced they were collaborating with producer Neal H. Mortiz, who produced the two recent ‘Goosebumps’ films in 2015 and 2018. The 2015 film starred Jack Black and Scream’s Dylan Minnette, while the 2018 film also starred Black, Madison Iseman, IT’s Jeremy Ray Taylor, and Caleel Harris of Netflix’s When They See Us. Together, both movies grossed over $250 million at the box office.
Since the original ‘Goosebumps‘ TV series aired from 1995 to 1998, many baby Millennials and elder Gen Z’s are most likely familiar with the reruns that would famously come on Cartoon Network every October from 2007 to 2009. You also might’ve known Goosebumps if you read the R.L. Stine YA books on which the ‘horror’ show was based. The original ‘Goosebumps’ TV series, which aired for four seasons, featured a different standalone story in each episode as each one was based on a different book. The episodic style was similar to The Twilight Zone.
The new ‘Goosebumps’ live-action TV series will take a different approach than the original R.L. Stine standalone series. According to Variety,
“The series follows a group of five high schoolers who unleash supernatural forces upon their town and must all work together – thanks to and in spite of their friendships, rivalries, and pasts with each other – in order to save it, learning much about their own parents’ teenage secrets in the process.”
Disney Plus has not yet announced a release date for the new ‘Goosebumps’ live-action series.
