Variety reports that the series is set thousands of years before the events of Peter Jackson’s adaptations of J.R.R. Tolkien’s novels; the trailer opens with words that are likely spoken by an ancient hobbit ancestor known as a harfoot played by Markella Kavenagh. Those words are, “”Haven’t you ever wondered what else is out there? There are wonders in this world beyond our wandering. I can feel it!” We feel the same way looking at this trailer.
The Verge reports that the series in condensing the timeline of Tolkien’s The Silmarillion, which chronicles key events in Middle Earth history such as the fall of Númenor, the rise of Sauron, and the forging of the rings of power. The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power will feature iconic characters such as a young Elrond (Robert Aramayo), Galadriel (Morfydd Clark), and Isildur (Maxim Baldry). Aramayo also played a young Ned Stark on Game of Thrones.
Amazon purchased the television rights to The Lord of the Rings in 2017 and made a five-season production commitment of over $1 billion. This is the most expensive series ever produced, and we can see it in the images from the trailer. The title of the series was revealed less than a month ago, and this trailer is our first glimpse of what the series has to offer.
