Netflix has announced in an official Tweet that it will be partnering with 2K and Take-Two to produce a live-action BioShock movie, an adaptation based on Ken Levine’s popular immersive sim set in an underwater city that has descended into chaos. According to The Hollywood Reporter, there is currently no writer or filmmaker attached to the BioShock movie. However, the announcement claims it has been in the planning stages for almost a year now.

The original BioShock was released in 2007 as a spiritual successor to the iconic 1994 FPS, SystemShock. Set in a fictional, underwater city known as Rapture, the unnamed player was mysteriously drawn to its depths following an incident and uncovers the history of how it was meant to serve as a safe haven for the rich and powerful, only to now stand as a chaotic, hellish world stalked by terrifying suited giants called Big Daddies.
“Netflix is among the best and most forward-thinking storytellers in all of entertainment today. We are thrilled that they share our vision and commitment to the BioShock franchise, which is beloved by millions of fans around the world. 2 K’s Cloud Chamber studio is deep in active development on the next iteration of the series and coupled with our partnership with Netflix, we remain highly confident that BioShock will continue to captivate and engage audiences like never before”, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick said in a statement regarding the BioShock movie announcement.
BioShock has long been a target for a Hollywood adaptation, as early back as the launch of the first game. Pirates of the Caribbean director Gore Verbinski was attached to produce a live-action movie based on the game, but the director’s planned budget and an R-Rating put the project on indefinite hold.
