Much to the joy of many Marvel Comics fans, the cosmic superhero Nova may finally be on his way to the Marvel Cinematic Universe! According to an exclusive report from Deadline, Marvel Studios is developing a Nova project with the help of Sabir Pirzada, the writer of the Disney+ Moon Knight series. Currently, it is unknown whether the project will be a feature film, like Iron Man or Spider-Man: No Way Home, or a limited series for Disney+ like Moon Knight or Wandavision. As with any other Marvel Studios project, Kevin Feige will serve as a producer on the Nova project.
Who is Nova?
Nova is one of the many cosmic superheroes from Marvel Comics. The first incarnation of the hero appeared in a fanzine called Super Adventures, which Marv Wolfman created in 1966. However, Nova made his official debut in 1976’s The Man Called Nova #1, which Wolfman wrote.
The story in The Man Called Nova #1, and the rest of the series follows Richard Rider, a teen living in New York City. Without warning, Rider is given fantastic powers by a dying member of the Nova Corps. This corps is an intergalactic police force. Members of it are gifted a uniform and a series of superpowers, including flight, super strength, and super speed. Rider then uses his newfound powers to become a superhero, fighting dangerous threats both on Earth and in space.
The Nova Corps previously appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in James Gunn’s first Guardians of the Galaxy movie. The members of the Nova Corps help the Guardians fight off and eventually defeat Ronan the Conquerer. However, in Avengers: Infinity War, it is confirmed that Thanos destroyed Xandar and the Nova Corps in his quest to gather the Infinity Stones. With this being established in the canon of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it will be interesting to see how Pirzada and Feige chose to introduce Richard Rider or any other version of the Nova character.
