I’ll be entirely honest; I didn’t go to see Olympus Falls when it was at the cinema. I didn’t get the DVD or download it on iTunes and I haven’t watched it on any streaming service it happens to be on. Everything I knew about it up until writing this article was that the White House gets attacked terrorists. It just seemed to be too much of a generic ‘badass with a gun takes down legions of terrorists by himself’ film to really bother with. Unless a film like that has a really interesting setting, I’ll stick with Bond and Die Hard for my terrorist killing films, thank you very much.
The sequel, London Has Fallen, on the other hand, caught my attention straight away. Part of it is because I’m a Brit and I like to see British cities being the focus of major movies and games (even if its role is to be attacked and blown up). But another part is the fact that everything is bigger and higher stakes. The first film had the White House being attacked and America being in danger. London Has Fallen ups the stakes by having an entire capital city being attacked and the entire western world being threatened. As the trailer below reveals, at least ten world leaders are killed throughout the course of the film. If you’re going to stick to the generic action movie template, then you might as well turn the terrorists into Saturday morning cartoon villains with a higher rating.
The basic synopsis of London Has Fallen is that the British Prime Minister has died under slightly suspicious circumstances. His state funeral becomes the place to be for world leaders. But when London is hit by a massive, organised attack in the middle of the proceedings, only the President, his secret service bodyguard and an MI6 agent can save the day.
