Comic book legend Frank Miller, best known for his works including The Dark Knight Returns and Sin City, gave Batman fans some pretty big news today. What was previously billed as the “final chapter” of Frank Miller’s Dark Knight Returns “trilogy” is no longer the final chapter. In an interview with Newsarama, Miller said that he will be doing a fourth installment of The Dark Knight saga after The Dark Knight III: The Master Race.

The Master Race was originally marketed as the culmination of Miller’s Dark Knight Trilogy (starting with The Dark Knight Returns and continuing through The Dark Knight Strikes Again), today brought the announcement that Miller plans to write Dark Knight IV soon. Miller told Newsarama his story for Dark Knight IV will spin out of what writer Brian Azzarello and artists Andy Kubert and Klaus Janson are doing in the third series beginning November 25. “I thoroughly applaud what [Brian’s] doing,” he told the outlet. “But now that he’s doing his, it’s now a four-part series. I’m doing the fourth.” While Miller mentioned his desire to continue the story, DC gave an official statement to CBR, where they “stated that Dark Knight III is not the final Dark Knight story, but there are currently no specific plans for more.

Beyond the main Dark Knight III series, DC will also be releasing Dark Knight Returns: The Last Crusade, co-written by Miller and Azzarello with art by John Romita Jr., a one-off comic book filling in backstory from the original 1986 miniseries, suggesting a willingness to expand the series. The Master Race, which has been building to a massive release next week on November 25 with multiple formats and a whole long box full of variant covers, Stay tuned for details!
