Nintendo has released almost as many game controllers recently as they have games. Custom Wii remotes, Wii classic controller, Wii U Pro controller, Smash Bros. fight pads, which of course are only usable for Smash Bros. Now they’re bringing over the Pokken Tournament  dedicated controller. Basically a rehash of the fight pad, the Pokken Tournament controller only works with the game it’s named for, and also requires a USB connection with the console to work. In the era of wireless everything, one has to wonder what’s with all the cords?

The controller isn’t required to play Pokken Tournament. The game is compatible with the gamepad, pro controller, and Wii classic controller as well. The Pokken Tournament controller is modeled after the arcade controls, however, the shoulder buttons have been replaced by face buttons next to Start and Select.

Pokken Tournament Controller
This is the arcade controller. The Wii U made by company Hori is similar, the key difference being the face buttons.

Gamers can now pre-order the Pokken Tournament controller on Amazon for $25. The item itself will ship on March 18, 2016. The game’s release date is slated for the 2nd quarter of next year, which makes a simultaneous release with the controller a fairly safe bet. With Pokemon Go bringing the monsters into the real world and Pokken Tournament letting them duke it out freely, the series is quickly coming alive the way it was always meant to be.
