The Recreated ZX Spectrum, which is the only authorized, full-size recreation of the popular 1980s PC, has made a welcome comeback over Christmas. The PC made an appearance on the popular British television review program ‘Charlie Brooker’s Wipe” which was on during UK’s Boxing Day Sale. After this appearance, the Recreated ZX Spectrum was selling at a very respectable estimated rate of 1 every 5 minutes during the sale.
The original ZX Spectrum was an 8-bit personal home computer released in the United Kingdom in 1982 by Sinclair Research Ltd. The Spectrum was among the first home computers created for the mainstream-audience in the UK. It can easily be compared in significance to the Commodore 64 in the USA. The introduction of the ZX Spectrum led to a boom in companies producing software and hardware for the machine, the effects of which are still seen. There are even some that credit it as the machine that launched the UK IT industry.
If you’re curious you can check out the Spectrum’s Amazon UK page found here. Or Sinclair’s official website found here. The continued popularity of the ZX Spectrum is impressive, and one could hope that this will encourage other companies to resurrect other classic PCs.
