Sir Michael Caine is the latest actor to offer his input regarding the Oscar nomination scandal.
The Oscar nominations were announced a couple of weeks ago and there has been a huge uproar within Hollywood in regards to racial diversity. Jada Pinkett Smith, Will Smith and Spike Lee are just a few high-profile Hollywood figures who are boycotting the event and are encouraging others to do so.
The debate began when no actors of color were included for acting nominations. To add fuel to the fire critically acclaimed films such as Creed and Straight Outta Compton were also snubbed by the Oscar comity.
Speaking to BBC Radio 4, Sir Michael Caine had this to say about the ordeal;
“You can’t vote for an actor because he’s black. You can’t just say, ‘I’m gonna vote for him, he’s not very good, but he’s black. You’ve got to give a good performance, and I’m sure some [did].
Sir Michael Caine continued by stating the Oscars are not the be all and end all of the acting world;
“Look at me, I got the Best European Actor [European Film Awards] and I got nominated for nothing else, the great thing about it is you don’t have to go [Oscars].
“Especially the Oscars. I have to go 24 hours on an aeroplane and have to sit there clapping for Leonardo DiCaprio.”
The screen legend did not oppose the boycott though and offered guidance by saying, “Be patient, of course, it will come! It took me years to get an Oscar.”
